Modrzewie Park Hotel*****

The Larch Park Hotel was built in 1938 and is a place that breathes history. "Pod Modrzewiami" - Villa built in 1938 for Maria daughter of the spa owner Adam Stadnicki and her husband Stefan Swieżawski - an eminent professor of the history of philosophy. The name of the villa comes from the location of the guesthouse on the larch-forested part of the spa park. The building was designed by engineer Stanisław Dziewolski.

Modern solutions

The modern body of the boarding house was composed in the modernist style and it also received the then popular architectural solutions taken from shipbuilding. The construction works were supervised by Adam Korybut Woroniecki - the director of Zakład Zdrojowy in Szczawnica from 1931 to 1939. The boarding house was equipped by the carpenter's workshop in Nawojowa, the Warsaw company "Jarnuszkiewicz" and the Rabka company "Kumer i Torba". The building was put into use for hotel guests in the spring of 1939.

Unusual shelter

In spite of the difficult years during the Second World War, immediately after its completion, the Modrzewie Park Hotel spread and became the pearl of Vilnius and meeting place for all those who wanted to take advantage of its microclimate, spa, variety of healing waters and beneficial treatments. During World War II, at various times, it was a shelter for countless Polish aristocrats, relatives and friends of Maria and Stefan Swieżawski; for displaced persons and refugees from various parts of Poland The Domowa Book (guest book), meticulously kept by Stefan Swieżawski over the years, recorded the names of the Czartoryski, Krasiński, Lubomirski, Mańkowski, Rylski, Sapieha, Sierakowski, Starowiejski, Zamoyski and others.

I will add this hotel to my list of favorites. Unobtrusive service at a high level, exquisite food in an intimate setting. Located in the Upper Spa Park with beautiful specimens of old-growth larch trees, that's probably where the name comes from.

A happy ending

The owners of the villa, as well as the whole Adam Stadnicki family, belonged to the Home Army. In the boarding house there operated an underground contact and transfer point for Home Army soldiers. When the war ended, the building shared the fate of the entire estate of Adam Stadnicki's family; it was confiscated and nationalized. For some time it functioned under the administration of the Polish Red Cross, and then as a spa hospital. In 1998 it returned to its rightful owners.

In 2005, André Mankowski, grandson of Adam Stadnicki, decides to invest in the property and breathe new life into the building. His goal was to make the Larchwood a unique hotel in this extraordinary heart of the larch forest. It took several years of work for the well-known guesthouse, now called Modrzewie Park Hotel, to be re-planned, developed, modernized, refurbished and decorated again. As a result of the works, the building is enlarged by Wellness center, swimming pool and business space.
